Attempts to understand the internal process of the mind Considers the mind to be like a computer. Processes include: how we learn, perception, attention, language and memory. Information is organised into schemas – building blocks of our understanding Input (senses) Process Output (behaviour)

Webb and Cartwright, 1978 Dreams help us to adjust to major life changes, threats and problems. Cartwright, 1984 – divorced women. Dreamers to tend to be better problem solvers. Why then do we forget about 95% of our dreams?

Unconscious and conscious mind. Dreams are pathways to the unconscious mind. Interpretation of dreams fundamental to his approach. Dreams are disguised fulfilment of repressed wishes and desires. Protects the dreamer while allowing an outlet for these desires.

Mechanisms for protection include: – Representability – Condensation – Displacement. Freud developed a dream vocabulary – flying, horse riding and dancing = sex. Phallic symbols eg swords, guns, poles = penis.
