Introductions Al Harding –Director of Instructional Technology –Derry Township School District Ellen Holtz –K-12 Field Account Executive –CDW-Government
3
Welcome and Introduction Goals for the session Explanation of the Technology Case Study – Derry Township School District What can be done to start the program Evaluation Process Decisions and the Decision Makers How to transition from Project to an institutionalized program
4
Overview of the Mini/Net book Technology Utilizing the mini-notebook to streamline the technology for the district More flexible to move laptops from room to room than traditional laptops, and certainly desktops Expand the use of technology through the access to those applications on the web/servers Replace the cost and maintenance of the textbooks by loading the textbook copy onto the mini’s Ability to reach more students for less budget dollars.
5
Technology in this grouping Mini-Notebooks Netbooks Handhelds Smart phones eBooks Generally the mini-notebook is the most robust and has the most features for unit to interface with peripherals. The other units are listed by mobility/interface ratio. (Still mobile for the user, less interfaces)
6
Streamline the Technology Technology in an educational arena must coordinate with the classroom environment – Are you planning for a 1:1 program? or Are you planning for the technology in the 21 st Century Classroom? Easy to use, easy to learn, easy to own (lease or purchase) Mini-notebooks are offered at a cost savings, and are robust and strong for the audience they serve.

Case Study – Method
10
Deployment Guidelines Selecting the core classrooms provided with mini-laptops for every student, every day –Selection of classrooms from application process Emphasis on effective instructional strategies and critical literacy skills (writing, reading, research) Continuous support provided – From external consultant and district technology integration coach unit/lesson design, effective instruction, and meaningful use of technology
11
Mission of Derry Township School District: Represents developmental steps to: –Launch students successfully into the 21 st Century –Develop global citizens who are competent in problem-solving, communication skills, technology, and teamwork.
12
Why we need to Teach Technology in School
13
Common goals The Classroom will be the start of the students’ educational experience –But not the only site. –Students will be mobile – learning is everywhere - if they are prepared Education must prepare students for careers that have yet to be invented –Technological fluency is now a basic skill –Compact portable technologies facilitate anywhere/anytime lifelong learning –Education must focus on new competencies
14
Goals for the Classroom “Engage the student - or enrage the student.” Shifts in Professional Development – –Effective instruction based on best practices –Collaboration between educators –Teach the lesson with the technology –Encourage through project-based activities
15
The Derry Township SD – Student Goals To increase student academic achievement, especially in the areas of critical thinking and literacy (reading/writing) To have students use the technology and tools most suited to their learning styles and future needs To focus on 21 st century teaching & learning
16
SPECIFIC OUTCOMES DESIRED Improved quality of student writing Greater depth of student understanding in content areas Higher percentage of assignments requiring critical literacy Stronger evidence of use of best practices supported by technology What does your district want to specify? Define your outcomes – planning makes it happen
17
DEVELOPMENT PHASE Internal study and discussion –Outcomes, goals, and budget Work with outside consultant –Expertise and experience on national level with similar projects
18
IMPLEMENTATION PHASE Application process Professional development activities –Whole staff –Selected group Technology Integration Coach 9 th Grade Computer Apps/ CFF Coach –Integrated into planning –Teaching skills in HS
19
SUSTAINING THE EFFORT (Maintenance/Institutionalization Phase) Everyday use of computers student technological sophistication enable focus on deeper learning Continued professional learning opportunities will guarantee supports for teachers Instructional and technology leadership from administration long-term infrastructure and financial planning
20
EVALUATION PHASE: Data To Be Collected and Analyzed STUDENT PERFORMANCE DATA TEACHER ASSIGNMENTS EXTENT OF USE OF LAPTOPS TYPE OF USE OF LAPTOPS ATTITUDINAL/PERCEPTUAL DATA Measuring Success
21
How to Deploy Infrastructure –Hardware, software, personnel for implementation, sustaining, and growth Support –Board, community, administration, teachers, students and parents Professional Development –Job-embedded, continuous, on-going Communication –Systemic perspective (K-12)
22
Refresh and Sustain It's tough to make predictions, especially about the future” (Yogi Berra) but... Schools that ignore the trends shaping tomorrow will cease to be relevant in the lives of their students, and will quickly disappear. We must transform all formal institutions of learning, from pre-K through college, to insure that we are preparing students for their future, not for our past. David Thornburg
23
Project to Program phase Commitment to implement and grow –Increase capacity (expand to more teachers/students) Planned deployment makes this phase – how are the students going to using the technology next year? and how many? –Continuous professional development (technology-integration coaches) Lead Teachers and mentors can help with this process Futures phases can involve students and their work with the deployment can be part of a course assignment.
24
Closing Thoughts…. "If the rate of change inside an institution is less than the rate of change outside, the end is in sight." Jack Welch Questions?
