5. Act of Settlement - 1701 PROVISIONS If William II and Mary III died without heirs, the throne would be given to Mary’s next Protestant relative. Went James I’s granddaughter, Sophia, Electress of Hannover (Germany) SAFEGUARDS Ensured that no Catholic would take the throne.
