2 Bill of Rights - 1689 PROVISIONS Parliament would chose the ruler Parliament would meet frequently Ruler may not suspend any law. Ruler may not impose any tax without Parliament’s approval SAFEGUARDS Protected Parliamentarians’ right to speak. Protected individuals from excessive bail and unusual punishment

3 Habeas Corpus Act - 1679 PROVISIONS Anyone arrested may demand to be charged within a reasonable amount of time or be released. SAFEGUARDS Protected individuals from being arbitrarily (for no particular reason)arrested and imprisoned.

4 Act of Toleration - 1689 PROVISIONS Freedom of Worship for non-Anglicans, except Catholics and Jews. Freedom of Conscience. SAFEGUARDS Protected Religious freedom

5 Act of Settlement - 1701 PROVISIONS If William II and Mary III died without heirs, the throne would be given to Mary’s next Protestant relative. Went James I’s granddaughter, Sophia, Electress of Hannover (Germany) SAFEGUARDS Ensured that no Catholic would take the throne.
