Steps for microscope use: Always carry with one hand on the arm and the other on the base Put stage up. Put on low power. Put slide on stage. Be sure there is no contact between the slide and objective. Turn on light. Center slide over light. Adjust diaphragm. Focus using coarse adjustment knob. Recenter slide. Change to medium power. Focus using coarse adjustment knob. Re-center slide. Change to high power. Focus using fine adjustment knob. Never use coarse adjustment knob when in high power. If you are unable to focus object in high power, return to medium power.

Magnification The eyepiece and objective lenses work together to magnify the object. The total magnification is found by multiplying the eyepiece (10X) by the objective lenses (4X, 10X, 40X). The total magnification for each lens is as follows: Low power: 10X times 4X = 40X Medium power: 10X times 10X = 100X High power: 10X times 40X = 400 X

Drawing and labeling When sketching your object, always use a pencil. Your sketch should take up the same amount of area in your drawing circle as you see it take up in the field of view in the microscope. The name of the object and the total magnification should always accompany your sketch.

Microscope storage Remove slide from stage and return the slide to proper place. Put on low power. Put stage up. Neatly wrap electrical cord around the base. Put dustcover on microscope. Return microscope to storage area and have it checked by teacher. Clean up work station.
