2. Joshua 1:7—8 (New King James Version) 7 “Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. 8 “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

3. In Context The Book of Joshua opens with the Lord speaking to Joshua, who is identified as “Moses’ assistant” The Lord tells Joshua that Moses is dead and begins to give Joshua both promises and instructions (note: God is the same— entering into covenant)

Joshua 1—6 (New King James Version) 1 After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, it came to pass that the Lord spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, saying: 2 “Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them— the children of Israel. 3 “Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses. 4 “From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the River Euphrates, asll the land of the Hittites, and to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your territory. 5 “No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you. 6 “Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.

Priority & Reason Notice that the very first command (instruction) was found in verse 8 –“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it…” Looking at this command, we see that God also gave us the “why” –so that we are able to do according to all that is written in it…

Psalms 1:1—3 (New King James Version) 1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinned, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; 2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. 3 he shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper

8. More from the Psalms Psalms 77:12 I will also meditate on all Your work, And talk of Your deeds. Psalms 119:15—16 I will meditate on Your precepts, And contemplate Your ways 16 I will delight myself in Your statues; I will not forget Your word. Psalms 119:23—24 Princes also sit and speak against me, But Your servant meditates on Your statutes. 24 Your testimonies also are my delight And my counselors. Psalms 119:48 My hands also I will lift up to Your commandments, Which I love, And I will meditate on Your statues Psalms 119:78 Let the proud be ashamed, For they treated me wrongfully with falsehood; but I will meditate on Your precepts Psalms 119:148 My eyes are awake through the night watches, That I may meditate on Your word Psalms 143:5 I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Your works; I muse on the work of Your hands.

Philippians 4:8—9 (New King James Version) 8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things, 9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.

Matthew 4: 3—11 (New King James Version) 3 Now when the tempter cam to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” 4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’” 5 Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you, ‘ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’” 7 Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’” 8 Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you Satan! For it is written ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’” 11 Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.

11. In Summary We are commanded to meditate on the word day and night: So that we may prosper So that we may know what to do that is right So that we may overcome temptation

12. Proclamations I will meditate on the Word every day! I will pray and ask God what His Word is saying to me each day! I will apply God’s daily Word to my life each day! I will overcome temptation by the Word!
