3 NextBack Accelerated Reader is also called: A.R. - The Accelerated Reader (A.R.) program is a computerized program that tests reading comprehension. -Students select books on their reading level, read independently or with a buddy, and take an independent comprehension test on the computer. -Each book is worth a certain number of points based on its length and reading level. -Students get a percentage of these points based on how many of the test questions they get right. -The program tracks their progress over the course of the school year. 5 NextBack Getting Started Main Menu 1. Take the STAR Reading test to evaluate the reading level… Questions continually adjust to the student’s responses. 2. Get results… A detailed report will help place new students, measure progress, and identify those who need individual help. 3. Assign A.R range… Students are assigned a “READING RANGE” and will choose books in that range. The STAR test will look like the above example. Quit

6 NextBack Find a Book Main Menu What is an A.R. RANGE A “READING RANGE” indicates the grade and month of your reading level. In the example above, a student would check out books with any of the following A.R. levels indicated on the spine: 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8, 1.9, 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4 The above numbers are all of the numbers in your RANGE. For Example: If you are in First grade your range might be 1.2 – 2.4, that means that your reading level is somewhere between a first grader in the second month of school (1.2) to a second grader in the fourth month of school (2.4). 7 NextBack Main Menu Finding a Book The Three Little Pigs A.R. 2.2 Points.05 Title of the Book A.R. Level A.R. Point Value Hint.. Sometimes it is helpful if you tell your child to ignore the decimal place. In this case they would look for a book between 12 and 24. (We just dropped the decimal point)!! That often makes it easier for the younger students. In the example on the previous page, we had a range of 1.2-2.4, The Three Little Pigs would be an appropriate choice since it is a 2.2. 9 What if my child improves?- at the end of each quarter your child will be given the STAR reading test and assigned an updated AR reading range. How will I know how he/she is doing?- each time your child takes an AR test he/she will be given a score to take home. My child is only in kindergarten, how do you expect him/her to be able to take an independent test on the computer? - At first, your child’s teacher will help them with the tests until they are ready to do it independently. Can my child take a test on a book that we have at home? – It is likely that many of your books are A.R. approved books. You can check the website called AR BookFinder to see if a book is A.R. If so, the range and point value of the book will be listed.AR BookFinder NextBack Main Menu F.A.Q.’s Quit
