2 2 1 JOHN 2: v 21-23 20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know. 21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it, and because no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. 23 Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also.

4 4 21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it, and because no lie is of the truth. 5 5 21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it, and because no lie is of the truth. but because you do know it lit: I did write because you do know “the truth” know – oida - to perceive, be aware of, understand; suggests fullness of "knowledge know “the truth” in Scripture see 2 Peter 1:12, 1 Tim 4:3, John 8:32 and because no lie is of the truth lit: every lie is not of the truth (ek = out of ) lie - to lie, a lie, falsehood ---- see John 8:44

6 6 22 Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. Who is the liar the liar identifies the subject – not any liar but “the liar” but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ lit: the one denying (present tense) denies - to refuse someone, not to know or recognize him, to reject him either in the face of a former relationship or better knowledge (Vine) see Jude 1:4

7 7 22 Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. that Jesus is the Christ is – present tense verb “eimi” Jesus - is a transliteration of the Heb. "Joshua” meaning Jehovah is salvation, (i.e., is the Savior) Christ - Christos - anointed, translates, in the Septuagint, the word “Messiah” – a title given to Jesus see 1 John 5:1, Acts 9:22, 17:3, 18:5 and 18:28

8 8 22 Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. This is the antichrist antichrist – can mean either against Christ or instead of Christ, or perhaps, combining the two, "one who, assuming the guise of Christ, opposes Christ“ (Westcott) word appears in 1 John 2:18, 1 John 4:3 & 2 John 1:7 the one who denies the Father and the Son lit: the one who is denying (present tense)

9 9 23 Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also. Whoever denies the Son lit: everyone denying the son (present tense) who denied the Son in Scripture? see Matt. 26:69-75, Matt. 22:15,23,34 & 41 does not have the Father lit: neither has the Father see John 5:18-23

10 10 23 Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also. the one who confesses the Son lit: the one confessing the Son (present tense) confesses - homologeō - lit., "to speak the same thing" (homōs - same, legō - to speak) see 1 John 1:9, 1 John 4:2 & 2 John 1:7 has the Father also see 2 John 1:9, 1 John 1:3 & John 5:19
