ADAPTATIONS
2
ADAPTATION A CHARACTERISTIC THAT HELPS AN ORGANISM SURVIVE AND REPRODUCE IN ITS ENVIRONMENT
3
Adaptations Organisms are BORN with these characteristics. It is in their DNA. They cannot change adaptations or gain adaptations. They either have it or they don’t
4
MUTATION A CHANGE IN A GENE OR CHROMOSOME. http://www.brainpop.com/health/geneticsgrowthanddevelopment/geneticmutations/
5
CAMOUFLAGE A trait of coloration or body shape that affects the survival of the organism. http://www.brainpop.com/science/ecologyandbehavior/camouflage/
6
Can you spot the animals?
14
I will Survive Lab Camouflage Partner up with the person sitting next to you. The person on the left side of the room will be PERSON A. The right person will be PERSON B. Pour all the dots on the black sheet of paper. The dots represent food. You must see how many dots you can get in your cup in 30 seconds.
15
CHOCOLATE LAB Each student will get ONE piece of chocolate. DO NOT EAT until given instruction to!
16
Mimicry If insects or other less powerful animals can trick their predators into thinking they are a different animal by the sounds they make, or the colors on their body, they just might survive a little longer.
17
Which one is poisonous?
18
Can you tell what this is?
19
Other Adaptations Hibernation “Playing dead” (opossum) Speed Sharp teeth Protective body part (quills, warning coloration, secretions)
20
Can you think of any other adaptations?
21
Natural Selection “nature selects” which traits are favorable and will survive. Animals with poor adaptations will die and only the good traits will continue in the gene pool. “Survival of the fittest” http://www.brainpop.com/science/ecologyandbehavior/naturalselection/
22
Adaptive radiation occurs when one ancestral species produces several new species over time. Adaptive Radiation
23
Selective breeding involves human choice in the traits desired in offspring. It differs from natural selection because it is not natural. Humans are selecting the species based on certain traits or characteristics. The different breeds of dogs is an example of selective breeding. Selective Breeding
24
Extinction – the end of a species. It can occur for many reasons including, destruction of habitat, extreme environmental changes, poaching/over hunting, or the introduction of a new species. Extinction
25
SURVIVAL ISLAND
26
I will Survive Lab SURVIVAL OF THE BEAKS Person 1- Spoon Person 2- Forceps Person 3- Clamps Person 4- Scissors
