Lab Coordination Meeting 3/21/13LHC IR Quadrupole Plan – G. Sabbi 2 Meeting Goals Present LARP plans to Lab management Key components (model magnets) and milestones Work packages assigned to each Lab Desired timelines, infrastructure and resource needs Get feedback from Lab management Are work packages in line with Lab’s capabilities/interests Are resources and infrastructure available when requested Discuss competing priorities for infrastructure and resources Make contingency plans in case of conflicts Update plans and track progress on a regular basis Overall plans, task assignments, schedules, expenses etc. Schedule regular meetings – optimal interval?

Lab Coordination Meeting 3/21/13LHC IR Quadrupole Plan – G. Sabbi 3 Current LARP activities Development of 150 mm aperture IR Quadrupole – QXF models Design and short models (SQXF) in collaboration with CERN Long prototypes (LQXF) built/tested mainly in the US Infrastructure for prototypes R&D in support of QXF and the HiLumi Design Study Many topics: conductor development, cable and coil fabrication, support structures and assembly, field quality, quench protection, radiation resistance, powering, cooling, alignment… Several platforms available, the most relevant are HQ, LQ, LHQ Will provide experimental feedback before the first QXF tests Production planning Schedules, cost estimates, infrastructure, Lab roles/contributions

Lab Coordination Meeting 3/21/13LHC IR Quadrupole Plan – G. Sabbi 6 120 mm aperture, 1.5 m long, 3x TQ/LQ forces, energy HQ01 series of tests is close to completion: 184 T/m at 1.9K! Above 90 mm, 240 T/m scaling Fine preload tuning together with full alignment Encouraging data on stress & protection limits Issues with coil design and fabrication process Several HQM (mirror) tests of single coils: Fast feedback on coil performance limits Reaches SSL, but training is slow HQ02 assembly expected in February Incorporates cored cables, coil design and process improvements However, new features are not uniformly implemented in all coils Cable and parts are available for a third series of coils (HQ03) R&D Status – HQ Platform
7
Lab Coordination Meeting 3/21/13LHC IR Quadrupole Plan – G. Sabbi 7 R&D Plans – HQ Platform HQ02: test second-generation HQ coils including provisions for coil expansion during reaction provisions for improved electrical integrity cored cables for suppression of eddy current effects HQM: test of special coils Test fabrication processes or components (coatings, heaters) Test new conductor designs (RRP 169, 217 and PIT wire) HQM mechanical optimization in view of LHQ, QXF mirrors HQ03 model with 4 identical coils of final design and process Realistic field quality & performance reference for HL-LHC Depending on program needs, HQ02-03 coils could also be used to validate new mechanical structures (BNL, longitudinal stacking)

Lab Coordination Meeting 3/21/13LHC IR Quadrupole Plan – G. Sabbi 8 HQ02 Tasks and Timeline Coil 22 under reaction/potting at BNL, complete in April-May HQ02 assembly close to completion at LBNL HQ02a test at Fermilab in April-May 2013 Test plan in preparation; studies at 1.9K up to 15 kA Probably no thermal cycle HQ02b assembly at LBNL in June-July 2013 Adjust pre-load or possibly replace one of the coils Train to maximum at 4.5K and down to 2.2K (but not 1.9K) Thermal cycle HQ02b test at Fermilab in August-September 2013 Next: possibility to perform special studies (stress limits, quench protection etc.) until early 2014. One of these test could be performed at CERN.

Lab Coordination Meeting 3/21/13LHC IR Quadrupole Plan – G. Sabbi 9 HQ03 Tasks and Timeline Wind/cure 5 coils at LBNL – May 2013 to December 2013 React/pot 5 coils at BNL – June 2013 to February 2014 Note that SQXF coil reaction/potting starts in May 2014 HQ03a assembly at LBNL in spring 2014 HQ03a test at Fermilab in summer 2014 Additional cycles of assembly and test as needed until mid-2015, possibly later. Could be transferred to CERN at some point. Notes: HQ03 plan still needs to be confirmed (after CM20) Availability of test setup for up to 19-20 kA at 1.9K and large diameter (~90 mm) warm bore/magnetic measurement probe would be a significant advantage for HQ02-03

Lab Coordination Meeting 3/21/13LHC IR Quadrupole Plan – G. Sabbi 10 Special HQ coils and HQM tests At the moment, no detailed plan and not budgeted But – relatively small effort and possibility to trade with HQ For example, one of the HQ03 coils could be diverted to a special coil, or one of the HQ assemblies/tests could be diverted to HQM Tests of special processes/components if requested by QXF – could get priority over HQ03 Test of new conductors in HQ would likely happen after HQ03 When new conductors are available and qualified at the strand/cable level Advantages of HQ platform are established reference/process and avoiding interference with QXF production line
