Tuesday, Nov 12 Lesson 5.6 The Coordinate Plane
12
Objective: To understand how to locate ordered pairs on the coordinate plane.
13
The Coordinate Plane At the end of this lesson you should be able to answer the following question. How are number lines and the coordinate plane related?
14
The Coordinate Plane A coordinate plane is a grid with a vertical y- axis and horizontal x-axis. y-axis x-axis
15
The Coordinate Plane The center of the coordinate plane is called the origin. y-axis origin x-axis
16
The Coordinate Plane The coordinate plane is divided into four quadrants. Quadrant II y-axis Quadrant I origin x-axis Quadrant III Quadrant IV
17
The Coordinate Plane When an ordered pair is located on an axis, it is not in a quadrant.
18
The Coordinate Plane Sometimes this may be called a Cartesian plane because it was invented by 17 th century French mathematician Rene Descartes.
19
The Coordinate Plane You can use an ordered pair (x,y) to locate any point on the plane. The first number in an ordered pair is the x- coordinate. The second number in an ordered pair is the y-coordinate.
20
The Coordinate Plane (5,2) would be 5 spaces on the x-axis and 2 spaces on the y-axis. (5,2)
21
The Coordinate Plane Identify the ordered pair that names the point.
22
The Coordinate Plane Identify the ordered pair that names the point. First, start at the origin and move along the x-axis until the point is directly above. Three spaces to the right equal +3.
23
The Coordinate Plane Identify the ordered pair that names the point. Next, move directly to the point. Fives spaces up equals +5.
24
The Coordinate Plane Identify the ordered pair that names the point. The point is (+3, +5) or (3, 5)
25
The Coordinate Plane Identify the ordered pair that names the point. The point is (+3, +5) or (3, 5) What quadrant is the point in?
26
The Coordinate Plane Identify the ordered pair that names the point. The point is (+3, +5) or (3, 5) What quadrant is the point in? Quadrant I
27
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair and quadrant.
28
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair and quadrant. (5,-4), Q IV (5, -4)
29
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair and quadrant.
30
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair and quadrant. (-4, 3), Q II (-4,3)
31
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair and quadrant.
32
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair and quadrant. (-5, 5), Q II (-5,5)
33
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair and quadrant.
34
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair and quadrant. (-3,-1), Q III (-3,-1)
35
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair and quadrant.
36
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair and quadrant. (2,0), No Q (2,0)
37
The Coordinate Plane We can use what we know about the number line and opposites to compare locations on the coordinate plane.
38
The Coordinate Plane E.g. The number line shows -4 and 4 are opposites.
39
The Coordinate Plane The coordinate plane shows that (-4,0) and (4,0) are also opposites, as they are the same distance from the y-axis in opposite directions. (-4,0) ( 4,0)
40
The Coordinate Plane So they are reflected across the y-axis. Notice the y-coordinate did not change and the x-coordinate are opposites. (-4,0) ( 4,0)
41
The Coordinate Plane Reflection Symmetry (sometimes called Line Symmetry or Mirror Symmetry) is when one half is the reflection of the other half.
42
The Coordinate Plane When graphing the reflection, the coordinate of the axis of reflection stays the same and the other number will be the opposite.
43
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair that is a reflection of (-3,2) across the x-axis. What is the axis of reflection? (-3,2)
44
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair that is a reflection of (-3,2) across the x-axis. What is the axis of reflection? x-axis (-3,2)
45
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair that is a reflection of (-3,2) across the x-axis. In the ordered pair, which is the x- coordinate coordinate? (-3,2)
46
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair that is a reflection of (-3,2) across the x-axis. In the ordered pair, which is the x- coordinate coordinate? -3 (-3,2)
47
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair that is a reflection of (-3,2) across the x-axis. What is the opposite of the other number? (-3,2)
48
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair that is a reflection of (-3,2) across the x-axis. What is the opposite of the other number? -2 (-3,2)
49
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair that is a reflection of (-3,2) across the x-axis. What is the ordered pair of the reflection across the x-axis? (-3,2)
50
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair that is a reflection of (-3,2) across the x-axis. The reflection of (-3,2) across the x-axis is (-3, -2). (-3,2) ( -3,-2)
51
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair that is a reflection of (1,-4) across the x-axis. Do this on your own.
52
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair that is a reflection of (1,-4) across the x-axis. The reflection of (1,-4) across the x-axis is (1, 4). (1,4) (1, -4)
53
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair that is a reflection of (-3,-1) across the y-axis.
54
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair that is a reflection of (-3,-1) across the y-axis. The reflection of (-3,-1) across the y-axis is (3, -1). (-3,-1)(3, -1)
55
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair that is a reflection of (6,-1) across the y-axis.
56
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair that is a reflection of (6,-1) across the y-axis. The reflection of (6,-1) across the y-axis is (-6, -1). (6,-1)(-6, -1)
57
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair that is a reflection of (0,0) across the y-axis.
58
The Coordinate Plane Name the ordered pair that is a reflection of (0,0) across the y-axis. There is no reflection of (0,0) (0,0)
59
The Coordinate Plane Kendall is building a square fence. She places the fence posts at the locations indicated on the grid. What is the location of the post that reflects (-4,4) across the y-axis? Do this on your own.
