Stamp Act March 1765 Prime Minister George Grenville Tax on all products using paper (newspapers, books, playing cards, legal documents…even dice!) Tax used to pay for debts from French & Indian War, other wars in Europe

Townshend Acts Adopted in 1767 under Charles Townshend Tax on glass, lead, paint, and paper imported from Britain Also a tax on tea!!! Boycotts and protests abound

American Response to Taxes “No taxation without representation!” Protests lead British to station 4,000 troops in Boston (1 troop:4 Bostonians) March 5, 1770 Fight between soldiers & colonists for jobs That evening, colonists return to taunt soldiers Insults hurled, snowballs thrown Soldiers fire into crowd, 5 colonists killed

Lord North allows BEI Co. to sell tea tax- free Colonial merchants cut out of tea market Group of colonists dress as Mohawk Indians to get aboard 3 ships loaded with tea, dump it into Boston Harbor Dubbed Boston Tea Party
