1
1. BIOLOGY- the study of life or living matter in all its forms and phenomena (bio = life; ology = the study of) 2. BIOHAZARD- a health risk posed by a pathogen used or produced in biological research 3. PRECISION- mechanical or scientific exactness 4. ACCURACY- freedom from error or defect
2
5. MENISCUS- the convex or concave (curved) upper surface of a column of liquid 6. CORROSIVE- having the quality of acidity or eating away 7. GRADUATED CYLINDER- a narrow, cylindrical container marked with horizontal lines to represent units of measurement and used to precisely measure the volume of liquids
3
8. MASS- the quantity of matter as determined from its weight or from Newton’s 2 nd Law (F=ma) 9. VOLUME- the amount of space, measured in cubic units, that an object or substance occupies 10. FLAMMABLE- easily set on fire; combustible
4
Competency 1.a
5
Used to make accurate measurements of liquid volumes. MENISUS (see vocab) Bumpers- used to protect if tipped over, keep them near the top of the cylinder
6
Used for exact (precise) volume measurements of liquids Several different kinds Plastic Volumetric (Glass)
7
Used to measure masses very precisely. Each beam measures a different mass unit
8
Pick up a sheet from the counter. Choose a partner NEAR you (DON’T CHANGE SEATS) and answer the questions on the back. You may work alone if you want. Write your answers below the questions. Hang onto it when you’re finish. Don’t turn it in.
9
Used to measure temperature Celsius (C = (F-32) x 5/9) Kelvin (K = C + 273) Fahrenheit (F = C x 9/5 + 32)
10
Used to measure length or distance
11
Used to contain volumes of liquids. Measurements are not as precise as graduated cylinders or pipettes Marks on the side indicate units of volume
12
Clear glass tube used to hold small volumes of substances Not very precise
13
Used to hold test tubes upright.
14
Used for crushing and grinding substances
15
Most common flask Used to contain volumes reaction solutions Not very precise, but there are units of volume marked
16
More precise than the Erhlenmeyer flask. Has precise graduation volume markers on the neck of the flask
17
Used to contain volumes of liquid substances Not very precise Rounded bottom makes it easy to tip over
18
Used to protect the eyes during experiments Vents help keep goggles from getting foggy
19
Used to protect clothing during an experiment
20
Used to hold hot or potentially hazardous equipment
21
Used to cover beakers, especially if the substance inside is potentially hazardous
22
Glass rod used to stir liquids
23
Produces a single gas flame, used for heating and sterilization STRIKER- piece of flint equipment used to “strike” a Bunsen burner
