Physiology Unit: Human Body System Lesson Plan and Activity 2013-2014
2
What’s Going on Today? Standards 9 and 10 Objective Explain how your body maintains homeostasis Catalyst Answer on a separate sheet of paper. 1.Define homeostasis. 2.Identify 2 body systems that help maintain homeostasis. Explain each body system’s role.
3
Ms. Carter Homeostasis and Feedback Loops
4
Homeostasis: is the ability to maintain a constant internal environment in response to environmental changes What is homeostasis?
5
Let’s See what Tim and Moby Have to Say… Keep the following ideas in mind: – Conditions in the outside world change, do the conditions in your body change? Give an example. – Thermoregulation is… – Thermoregulation works by… – Feedback systems are… – Negative feedback means… – Positive feedback rarely occurs. What is an an example when positive feedback would occur? http://www.brainpop.com/health/bodysystems/h omeostasis/preview.weml

WHAT IS A FEEDBACK MECHANISM??? A feedback mechanism is a process where the product or result of an activity modifies the factors that produce that product. There are over 1000 feedback loops in the human body. Each loop effects others and is effected by others. There are positive and negative feedback loops in the body.

Soooo….. Who ate breakfast this morning? If you ate this morning… Insulin levels are higher. In your bloodstream you had elevated levels of glucose. You were out of homeostasis and into hyperglycemia. Your blood went to your pancreas where glucose receptors on Beta cells reacted to elevated glucose levels by putting insulin into the blood stream. The Insulin in their blood stream caused glucose to be transported to muscle and fat cells for storage. This caused a decrease in blood sugar. This is an example of a negative feedback cycle which is the most common in the human body.

Day 1 Homeostasis Helping Trio
11
Day 2 Project Overview Purpose: To explore how the various organ systems in the body help to maintain homeostasis, and present your findings to your classmates in a professional manner. Description: In groups of two or three, you and your partner(s) will learn about one of the organ systems in our bodies. You will become experts on your individual system by researching and learning about the structure and function of this system as well as the associated vocabulary. You will then be required to develop and teach a lesson with an accompanying activity that helps them learn about your system.
12
Day 2 Project Overview Lesson/Presentation (PowerPoint, Prezi) Activity (Word Sort, Foldable, Color and Label) 5 Multiple Choice Qs Works Cited
13
Get Ready to Take Notes Get a sheet of paper to take notes on how to PLAN AN AWESOME LESSON to be a GREAT TEACHER
14
Components of a Lesson 1.Objective 2.Key vocabulary (10-15 words) 3.Checks for Understanding 4.Notes 5.Practice Activity 6.Assessment (10 Test Questions)
15
Objective SWBAT explain the different components of a lesson plan by having group/classroom discussion – What skills are the students practicing Explain – How are they going to perform that skill Group/Classroom Discussion
16
Key Vocabulary How do you think you should choose the vocabulary words for your lesson? Why do teachers create vocabulary words? Why are vocabulary words important?
17
Checks for Understanding Example: Turn to your partner and explain the importance of having vocabulary words. -Why do we need to have check for understanding questions during a lesson? -Why are check for understanding questions important?
18
Lecture/Notes Should be 5-10 slides No longer than 15 minutes Simple bullet points
19
Practice Activity Word sort Foldable Color and label ** If you present to me a better idea- then upon approval I may allow you to do a different activity**

Day 2 What’s Going On Research Your Body System Complete Body Systems Informational Graphic Organizer – Delegate who is responsible for each part Write down what you will work on AND who will be working on that particular task Homework: Complete Research; Must have 3 sources and a Works Cited Page
23
Day 3 What’s Going On Begin Lesson Plan Complete Human Body Systems Planning Template Delegate who is responsible for each part – Write down what you will work on AND who will be working on that particular task
24
Day 4 What’s Going On Begin Creating Lecture/Presentation Delegate who is responsible for each part – Write down what you will work on AND who will be working on that particular task
25
Lecture/Presentation 15-20 minutes Title: Body System Labeled Image of your body system An explanation of the FUNCTION of your body system A list of major organs in your body system and each of their functions. Include a description of how they work together. 1 disease or disorder associated with your body system and it’s causes, effects, and treatment. Explain how your body system works with other systems to maintain homeostasis. Include 3 examples Any Specifics for your System
26
Day 5 What’s Going On Finalize Lecture/Presentation Create Activity to accompany Lesson – Delegate who is responsible for each part – Write down what you will work on AND who will be working on that particular task Your activity needs to be 1 of the 3 – Word sort – Foldable – Color and label – ** If you present to me a better idea- then upon approval I may allow you to do a different activity**
27
Lesson Activity 15-20 minutes Needs to relate to the material taught by YOU Needs to include clear and concise directions so students can do without your guidance Make it fun/interesting! **** EACH ACTIVITY NEEDS TO HAVE AN ANSWER KEY GIVEN TO THE TEACHER*****
