Rates, Ratios, Proportions & Unit Rate By Colin C.
2
Proportions As statement that two ratios are equal. Can be written as two equal fractions. Can be written using a colon. For example, a:b = c:d. If two ratios are equal, then the cross products are also equal. a:b = c:d
3
Proportions (Cont.) The arithmetic proportion is using numbers to solve the proportions. The Algebraic proportions use variables to solve the proportions. A proportion is an equality of two different ratios. In a proportion the cross products are equal. There are two methods to proportions, Multiplication property of equality and cross products.
4
Rates and Ratios A rate is a ratio that compares different kinds of units. A ratio is a comparison of two different values. There are three ways to show a ratio, for example, 12 to 42,12/42, or 12:42. 84/25, 84 to 25 and, 84:25 54/62=25/32
5
Rates and Ratios (cont.) Ratios usually compare one thing to another. Ratios usefulness comes in the setting up and solving of proportions. 54/22, 54 to 22 and, 54:22 22/34=12/8
6
Unit Rates A unit rate is the price per unit of measure. 5/15.98= x/12.99
