Writing and Solving Proportions BEFORE: You wrote and compared ratios. NOW: You’ll write and solve proportions. WHY? So you can find out how much an elephant eats.
2
ELEPHANTS Each day, an elephant eats 5 pounds of food for every 100 pounds of its body weight. How much does a 9300 pound elephant eat per day? Proportions can help solve this problem. Proportions are equations that state that two ratios are equal.

Problem Solving: You are knitting an afghan with red, green, and blue stripes. There are equal numbers of red and blue strips. There are twice as many green stripes as there are red stripes. The afghan has 20 stripes. You are knitting an afghan with red, green, and blue stripes. There are equal numbers of red and blue strips. There are twice as many green stripes as there are red stripes. The afghan has 20 stripes. A) Find the ratio of the number of red stripes to the total number of stripes on the afghan. B) How many red stripes are there on the afghan?
