Livers are pHun! Enzymes and pH
2
What the pHudge is pH? / The pH scale measures how strong an acid or a base is. / Any solution with a pH lower than 7 is an acid / Any solution with a pH higher than 7 is a base / The pH scale measures how strong an acid or a base is. / Any solution with a pH lower than 7 is an acid / Any solution with a pH higher than 7 is a base
3
The pH scale / Vinegar, coke, and stomach acid are strong acids / Baking soda, ammonia, and bleach are strong bases
4
But what is it really? / pH scale really measures the concentration of H+ ions vs. OH- ions
5
But what is it really? / H+ > OH- = acid / H+ < OH- = base / H+ > OH- = acid / H+ < OH- = base
6
Enzymes / Enzymes lower the energy needed for a reaction to take place. / No enzymes = you die. / Enzymes lower the energy needed for a reaction to take place. / No enzymes = you die.
7
A mini puzzle / Enzymes are like puzzle pieces - they must fit exactly in order to work
8
So how does this relate?
