5  What was the first permanent English settlement in North America and what year was it established?

7  What was the second permanent English settlement in North America and what year was it established?

9  After the establishment of Jamestown colony, thousands of immigrants made their way to English America, establishing the original 13 colonies.

10  The English colonies were separate communities scattered along the Atlantic coast from New England to Georgia. Few people in the Carolinas ever saw or spoke with a person from Massachusetts or New York or Pennsylvania.

11  People did not often use the word “American” to describe themselves or their country. Most thought of themselves as English or Dutch or French- -whatever their homeland was. Eventually, the land would change these Europeans into resourceful Americans.

12  Although there were no formal ties between colonies, geographic and cultural factors drew the colonies together in groups.

14  Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire.  Plymouth settled in 1620.  Pilgrims and Puritans came seeking religious freedom.  Life was shaped by religion and geography.  Geography: Cold harsh winters, poor rocky soil  Subsistence farming: farming for enough food for your family  Economy: Depended on forests and the sea (fishing, shipping, trade, whaling, lumber)

15  New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware.  Geography and Economy: Rich soil, grew food cash crops. BREADBASKET (wheat, oats)  Most DIVERSE colonial region-- immigrants came from many European countries and practiced a variety of religions.

16  Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia  Vast, low-lying swamp land  Geography: Warm weather and soil ideal for cash crops  Economy: Lived off the land (agriculture)  Tobacco, rice, sugar cane, indigo  Slave labor  Wealthy planters built large plantation homes filled with the finest of furniture, china, and other luxuries
