The Hare in the Moon Part I There were four wise friends; a hare, a jackel, an otter and a monkey. They lived happily in a forest. After working the whole day, they would sit together in the evening and exchange notes about the events of the day and make good resolutions for the future.

He knew that the men and woman were superior to animals and was always telling his friends stories of their goodness and nobility. It was a clear and beautiful night. You will do nothing except wait and when I am well roasted, feast on me. The god Sakka was very impressed that a small animal could be so sacrificing. But to be further convinced of his goodness he caused a fire to spring up from the earth. Without any second thought the hare jumped into the flames. Surprise! The flames were cool! They did not burn him. He was unharmed. He should: what’s this? A cold fire ?

You will be famous the world over.” Raising his glittering hands and blessing, god Sakka stretched his arms towards the distant mountains. As if by magic, a shaft of brilliant light sped from peak and entered his open palm. From his palm it sped towards the moon, shining sweet and serene in the starry heaven. Wonder of wonderness! The shaft of light spread on the face of the moon, and the outline of the hare appeared on the surface.
