Fields of Study in Communication 1. Intrapersonal: the process of using messages to generate meanings within the self 2. Interpersonal: the process of using messages to generate meaning with at least two people in a situation that allows for mutual opportunities for both speaking and listening 3. Small group: the process of using messages to generate meaning with a small group of people (more than two people who have a common purpose, goal or mission). Specific characteristics include: sense of connectedness, self disclosure and vulnerability. 4. Public: the process of using messages to generate meanings in a situation in which a single source transmits a message to a number of receivers 5. Mass: the process of using messages to generate meanings in a mediated system, between a source and a large number of unseen receivers 6. Computer-mediated: the process of sharing information through computer and technology; this differs from mass because of the ability of the receiver to provide feedback; includes, newsgroups, emails, instant messages, and web page conversations

Nonverbal codes are all symbols that are not words, including body movements, use of space and time, clothing and adornments, and sounds other than words (tone, speed of speech, rate of speech, encouragers) 2. Rhetorical analysis: the art of composing and analyzing effective discourse 3. Dyadic: two person communication 4. Metacommunication: communication about communication
