Problem-based learning: Are community and recreational facilities enough in Cheung Chau? Group 5

Introduction Cheung Chau is said to be a declining island in Hong Kong recent years. The residents complain that Cheung Chau is lack of recreational and community facilities. We hope to know what they need and how to enhance their living standard in order to achieve a sustainable development.

Methodology We conduct our research by counting the community and recreational facilities in Cheung Chau. interviewed the local people through questionnaire. Taking photos From the internet Field work Google Earth Method of analysis Quantification chart

Analysis----Community facilities 70% of the local residents think that there are not enough community facilities

More interviewees think there are not enough community facilities in Cheung Chau. Most of the interviewees said they wanted a community hall. Swimming Pool, hospital, park and sport centres came to the second choice. They want sport centres as the booking fee of indoor sport centre is too expensive and the supply of booking is not enough.

Also, they want fitness centres. It seems that the facilities for sport activities are seriously deficient. Some interviewees suggest that the facilities can expand to improve. The other suggest the government can subsidies to expand or renovate it.

Analysis----Recreational facilities 100% of the local residents think that there are not enough recreational facilities

From the above data,we can see that most of the Cheung Chau residents think that Cheung Chau does not have enough recreational facilities. They do not have much entertainment.70% of interviewees want recreation centre and cinema. Fewer people want shopping malls and karaoke. Half of the interviewees are discontent about their living standard but half of the people do.

suggestions Expansion -area of the buildings (eg. Hospital supply more beds and increase medical equipment to enhance medical service quality) Indoor sports centre --- provide more booking quotas) -Man-made island ---for land use supply

Subsidy -renew/expand facilities (eg. Park ---make green by planting trees and increase more amusement equipments) -transport fee ---can allow them to go to the urban area by paying lower price

What should we build? For community facilities -Community hall -Indoor court For recreational facilities -building a recreational centre with various activity rooms such as 1. A small cinema 2. A tennis court 3. A dancing room

Conclusion Many residents in Cheung Chau think not enough recreational facilities don’t have much leisure. Their lives seem to be boring. In order to improve the living standard of the local people. It is necessary to improve the facilities in Cheung Chau through expanding renew with government subsidy.

Limitations Without enough time to collect data Small range of interviewees Cannot go inside the facilities to have a check Cannot seek advice from the official. Cannot really know the problems of the buildings simply through eye observation.
