We saw yesterday that the area of a rhombus and a kite can be found using the formula: Area = OR Area = Area of a rhombus and a kite ½ × (the product of the lengths of thediagonals) ½xy
2
Example 1 Find the area of the following. 4m 6m 7cm 4cm 210mm 12cm A = ½xy A = ½ × 4 × 6 A = 12 m2m2 A = ½xy A = ½ × 14 × 8 A = 56 cm 2 A = ½xy A = ½ × 21 × 12 A = 126 cm 2 FIRST get both lengths in the same units 7cm 4cm
3
Example 2 Find the area of the following. 3m 7m 210cm 5m A = ½xy A = ½ × 3 × 7 A = 10½ m2m2 A = ½xy A = ½ × 56 × 85 A = 2380 cm 2 A = ½xy A = ½ × 4·2 × 5 A = 10·5 m 2 FIRST get both lengths in the same units 60cm 28cm 64cm32cm Only use the lengths of the diagonals 210cm 28cm 25cm

As we worked formula for the area of a rhombus and a kite we could do the same to get the formula for a trapezium: Area = Remember the height must be the a and b are the parallel sides. Area of a trapezium PERPENDICULAR height
5
Example 3 Find the area of the following. 32m 71m 320cm 3·7m FIRST get all lengths in metres Only use the lengths of the parallel sides and the perpendicular height 26m 22cm 27cm 11cm 25cm 20cm 2m 180cm
