Character Types: Dynamic & Static Characters CHANGING the way that we think about characters…

First things first…  You are going to take notes today, but they will be guided notes.  Go to your teacher’s website and locate the document that has a similar title to this presentation.  Please read the directions as to what app this should opened in for easiest use.

Dynamic Characters  A dynamic character is a major character in a work of fiction who encounters conflict and is changed by it.  They tend to be more fully developed and described than the other characters.  Oftentimes, they are the characters you most love in fiction as they probably seem as real to you as people you know in real life.  USUALLY, this character is the protagonist, or hero of the story.

Dynamic Characters  Reminding word for dynamic characters  What word sounds like “ dynamic? ” DYNAMITE!

Ms. Furness’ reminding word: When a stick of dynamite goes off, it CHANGES the entire look or landscape! This is similar to dynamic characters. Once they CHANGE, they are never the same, just like a stick of dynamite changes the look of something forever. What word will help you remember this type of character?

Think-Pair-Share  When you think of some of the characters that we’ve met this year, who would count as a dynamic character?  Think of the stories we’ve read: Rikki-tikki-taviRikki-tikki-tavi User FriendlyUser Friendly

Static Characters  When people say that a character is "static," they're referring to the fact that a character does NOT change.  Static characters are usually one of the following:  A minor character who does not change or grow as a result of the main conflict  A minor character who does not appear very often in the story, but plays a supporting role to the main character(s)  A villain or “bad guy” who causes problems for the main character (antagonist)

Ms. Furness’ reminding word: Reminding word/picture: I think of “static cling”, or what happens when a dryer sheet STICKS to your clothes when it comes out of the dryer. Similarly, static characters “stick” to who they are; they do not change. What word/picture will help YOU remember??

Think-Pair-Share Again  When you think of some of the characters that we’ve met this year, who would count as a static character?  Think of the stories we’ve read: Rikki-tikki-taviRikki-tikki-tavi Three Skeleton KeyThree Skeleton Key

Applying this to The Outsiders 1. Look at each of the characters that is listed on page 3 of the attachment. 2. Determine and LABEL if the character is dynamic or static. 3. Add a brief explanation why you are labeling him that way. And remember to be specific—it is not enough to say that they changed/did not change. Tell me how/why!
