History of the Nicholasville Police Department’s FTO Program ► 1987-1992: No formal FTO Program. Officers given the keys to a cruiser and a map of the city.

History Continued ► 1992-1995: Recruits required to ride with another officer for 2 weeks. No training for the officer, no evaluations for the recruit, and no accountability for this program. ► 1996-Present: Formal FTO program established. Trained FTOs.

How Does a Field Training Officers’ Personal Ethics Affect A New Recruit?

Course Objectives ► Officers will know the definition of “ethics” ► Officers will know the effects of “their” ethics on recruits. ► Officers will understand the importance of “Role-Modeling” for their recruit. ► Officers will understand their part as a “Role-Model” within the department and why they are a integral part of the success or failure of an officer or even a department.

Course Objectives Continued ► Officers will be given tools to recognize and combat ethical dilemmas.

Ethics as defined by American Heritage Dictionary A set of principles of right conduct. or A theory or a system of moral values.

How does your ethics affect the new recruit? How does your ethics affect the new recruit? ► 75% of learning is through the sense of sight. What or how you do it; affects the recruit more then what you say. ► The recruit will model your behavior in the future. ► Productivity. ► Disrespect vs. Respect.

Role-Modeling Recruits will learn from your role modeling whether or not you purposefully present yourself as a role model. Actions Speak Louder Then Words

The Power Of The FTO Who else molds a recruit from day #1 out of the academy? Who’s behaviors and habits will a recruit model? The recruits you train today will be leaders of the department in the future.
