What is life? Characteristics of living things Cell organization Similar chemicals Growth and development Energy Use Reproduce Respond to surroundings
4
Characteristics of Living Things Cell organization- Living things are single celled or many celled. Similar chemicals- Living things contain some arrangement of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, nucleic acids and water. Growth and development- growth means getting bigger over time. Development means to mature and change to become more complex Energy Use- Autotrophs can use sun’s energy to make food. Heterotrophs need to digest food to create energy Reproduce- cells can reproduce within body systems as well as within a population. Respond to surroundings- Stimulus and Response. Change in light and sound that can cause a change in behavior.

What are the needs of living things? Water Space Food Stable Internal Conditions
9
What are the needs of living things? Water- Plants (autotrophs) need water in order to grow and become food for animals (heterotrophs). Water covers approximately 2/3 of the earth. Most living cells need to exist in a watery environment Space- living things need space in which to live, find shelter and find a mate. This becomes necessary to support a population of living things. Food- living things need to make their own food (heterotrophs) or find food (heterotrophs) so that they can derive energy to support processes of life Stable Internal Conditions- this is maintained inside a healthy organism. Compare goose bumps to a fever.

Cell Theory A widely accepted explanation of the relationship between cells
13
Cell Theory- A widely accepted explanation of the relationship between cells --- All living things are made of cells --- Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things --- All cells are produced from other cells.
