2 Purpose / Objectives of this Staff Development To explain video clips To explain and demonstrate how video clips can be useful in the classroom To share resources of available video clip databases

3 What are video clips? Video clips are short segments of a video that are used as an enhancement to a lesson or unit of study. Trigger videos are a type of video clip that presents a scenario of an event, problem, or opportunity that triggers an emotional response from the viewers.

4 Why should I use video clips in the classroom? Uses less class time Opportunities to visit other places and times Opportunities for meaningful discussion Opportunities to inspire writing Opportunities to create emotional responses Engages students in learning Opportunity to use appropriate clips of inappropriate videos

5 How do I use video clips in my classroom? 1. Select a clip from an Internet database or preview a video to select the part you want to use. Keep your learning objective(s) in mind as you select the clip. 2. Include lead-in activities to prepare the students for the clip. You may need to introduce the clip and explain what they will be viewing. 3. Segment your viewing. When an important point comes up on the clip, pause it afterwards and ask the students what they saw. Point out details for them to watch for or remind them about the questions they are trying to answer. Ask them what they think will happen next, then continue the clip until it is over or until you want to pause again. 3. Discuss the clip afterwards and/or complete follow-up activities.
