2 * Segregation was still prominent in the South * Jim Crow Laws: The laws that segregated the blacks and whites in the South * Brown vs. Board of Education: Landmark Supreme Court case that overturned Plessy vs. Ferguson and said that schools must be desegregated

3 * 14 year old boy from Chicago, Il who went to go visit his relatives in Mississippi. * In a grocery store, he said something to a young white woman * A few nights later her husband and his brother in law came and took Till. * They beat him, gouged out an eye and shot him. * Threw his body in the river. * They were acquitted of kidnapping and murder * Later admitted killing him in a magazine interview
