3 Video Intro Comparing city planning and livability in Portland, OR and Denver, CO. Take notes- why do the filmmakers believe Portland is more “livable” than Denver?

4 Prompt What makes Portland livable? What potential problems and opportunities exist with future growth? What is the role of the sciences in determining solutions to these problems and opportunities? How can urban planning in Portland act as a model for future planning around the world?

5 Team Time Discuss with your team what areas of downtown Portland you are planning on observing, and what types of data your team would like to collect. Use one of your maps to show where your group plans on going, and hand it in before you leave.

6 Debriefing the fieldtrip Discuss general observations with your team Go eat lunch, and make it back to the cafeteria by 1:00 PM for the afternoon session

7 Identify a problem As a group, identify ONE potential problem/opportunity/issue facing the City of Portland as it develops in the future (15 minutes).

8 Individual Brainstorm Individually, spend 20 minutes writing about potential solutions to the problem or issue your group identified.

9 The final session You and your group are responsible for generating 3 different proposals in response to your problem/issue. Then, you must outline the pros and cons of each proposal All work must be uploaded to your group folder on Google Docs by the end of the day.

11 When you think you are done… Log out of Google Docs, and then log back in to make sure that your work saved. If you are having difficulties, email your work to Mr. Scheffler or Mr. Gleason.
