BECKY PECORA ANGELIA SELIGA NICOLE MALEGA CAMBER FAIRCHILD Hydrogen and Fuel Cells
2
Hydrogen The world’s most abundant element in the universe. Can be burned as fuel. Found in every molecule of living things and water.
3
Benefits of using Hydrogen as fuel Hydrogen doesn’t release pollutants associated with burning fossil fuels and biomass. When hydrogen is burned, it combines with oxygen to produce water vapor, a harmless byproduct.
4
How is Hydrogen gas produced? It can be produced by using electricity to split molecules of water. We may even be able to grow plants to produce hydrogen cost-effectively.
5
Fuel Cells Produces electricity by combining hydrogen fuel with oxygen from the air. When hydrogen and oxygen combines, electrical energy is produced and water is the only byproduct.
6
Benefits of Fuel Cells Can be fueled by anything that contains plenty of hydrogen. Includes natural gas, alcohol, and even gasoline.
7
Reasons we don’t use Hydrogen and Fuel cells The current methods that are used to produce hydrogen aren’t very efficient. They require lots of energy Very expensive Cause pollution A lot of hydrogen is needed to produce the same amount of energy as a tank of gasoline.
