1
Drug Detection Dogs By Jaclyn and Aaron WHO KINDLY VOLUNTEERED <3
2
Sniffer Dogs Dogs used by police to detect illegal drugs in peoples bags/on their bodies
3
Sniffer Dogs They can successfully detect small amounts of cannabis… just not the hard drugs (poor track record) The presence of the dogs in the public makes people feel safer In contrast, some people feel less safe as they feel intimidated
4
Sniffer Dogs Fail 27% success rate…which means that 73% of people identified by the dogs are not in possession of illegal drugs Therefore, not efficient and effective like stated Sniffer Dogs do not reduce actual crime
5
Police Powers (Drug Detection Dogs) Act The bill is aimed primarily at detecting and prosecuting persons committing offences relating to the supply of prohibited or plants. Measured against this, the dogs are a ‘miserable failure’
6
Sniffer Dogs do not provide reasonable suspicion Given the dismal accuracy of drug detection dogs, they are not sufficient to constitute reasonable suspicion
7
Sniffer Dogs Location Dogs are policing CityRail trains Walking down Oxford, Victoria or King streets Drug dealers are likely to be in these places, roaming around
8
Misuse of State Power The detection dogs are being used by police as an excuse to trawl the community. The police are abusing their power and using the dogs to detain citizens they would not be otherwise able to, and then recording their information, even when they haven’t committed an offence. Police are taking advantage of the warrants
9
Health Hazard When people see the dogs approaching they swallow the drugs or abandon the drugs where children or others might find them
10
Conclusion Sniffers dog are a failure Their inability to identify drug suppliers = minimal benefit and therefore not cost efficient Should not be used to identify and catch drug dealers. Money should be put elsewhere The dogs are being used in all the wrong places
