September 28th, 2001 Louis Guerrero IT/CS Workshop on Ethernet as a field-network at CERN2 SUMMARY Overview of IT Division IT networks in brief Operation Ethernet for controls Ethernet for controls, questions?

September 28th, 2001 Louis Guerrero IT/CS Workshop on Ethernet as a field-network at CERN3 Overview of IT Division Covers among other activities: General purpose computing –Desktops –Communications infrastructure –Computer and network security –Database infrastructure –… Physics and engineering computing –Compute farms –Central data recording –Central data storage –Software development tools –Physics libraries development, simulation –Appropriate networking –… Information Technology Division

September 28th, 2001 Louis Guerrero IT/CS Workshop on Ethernet as a field-network at CERN4 IT networks in brief (1) Today : Campus + Accelerators –Cover more than 100 Km 2 –About 20 000 Optical Fibers Km About 120 routers for 800 subnets : multi-protocol More than 400 switches 2000 Ethernet hubs 135 concentration points Structured cabling on 30 000 UTP sockets 18 000 systems interconnected : –3500 Fast Ethernet –600 Gbe ports –300 Servers on Gbe

September 28th, 2001 Louis Guerrero IT/CS Workshop on Ethernet as a field-network at CERN6 IT networks in brief (2) Multi-Gigabit backbone : –Site wide –Offers services at : 1000/100/10 Mbps Ethernet –Redundancy : Optical Fiber path to : –each star point –accelerator sites –alarms Central routers and switches At the equipment level : (PS, CPU,…) N.B.: Size and complexity make full network redundancy prohibitive !

September 28th, 2001 Louis Guerrero IT/CS Workshop on Ethernet as a field-network at CERN7 IT networks in brief (3) Multi-Gigabit backbone : –Multicast capable –QoS capable Image Voice Telephony Real Time control Users connect at the edge, not at the backbone level

September 28th, 2001 Louis Guerrero IT/CS Workshop on Ethernet as a field-network at CERN8 Operation Centralized database services for : –Name services –Network Topology –Devices configuration Centralized management services: –Network node management –Fault management –Statistics Contract for first line maintenance : 24 Hours / 365 Days

September 28th, 2001 Louis Guerrero IT/CS Workshop on Ethernet as a field-network at CERN9 Ethernet for controls Services : –10/100 Mbps Ethernet connections –IP protocol suite : BOOTP, DNS, TELNET, SNMP,… –IP + DHCP, for nomadic devices Connection procedures defined by IT To be connected to a service the Universal MAC addresses are the only one accepted Network service level guaranteed by IT

September 28th, 2001 Louis Guerrero IT/CS Workshop on Ethernet as a field-network at CERN10 Ethernet for controls, questions? Common mode problems partially solved by topology, optical fibers path and equipment redundancy: do we need to go further ? Does controls merit a different technology ? No, there is no need for different networks. Separated networks ? Useful for accelerators maintenance ? Useful for general services ? Real-time ? How many applications can’t be satisfied ? Issues concerning LHC controls

September 28th, 2001 Louis Guerrero IT/CS Workshop on Ethernet as a field-network at CERN11 Workshop on Ethernet as a field-network Thank you
