1 Moats in Mesopotamia In Mesopotamia they had many problems. One of those problems were attacks by neighboring communities. To solve this problem, they built strong walls around their city. They also dug moats() outside the city walls to prevent enemies from entering the city. In case of attack, farmers fled the fields and took safety inside the city walls.
