2 Background The end of the Vietnam War did not end violence in Cambodia Cambodia suffered U.S. bombing during the war and continued to be unstable for years This picture shows exactly where Cambodia, also known as Kampuchea is. It’s location bordering Vietnam made it a target for US bombing during the war.

3 Causes In 1975 Communist rebels called the Khmer Rouge set up a brutal government Under the leadership of Pol Pot 2 million people were slaughtered in an attempt to turn Cambodia into a rural society This slaughter was almost a quarter of Cambodia’s population

4 Actions In 1978 the Vietnamese invaded Cambodia to overthrow the Khmer Rouge Vietnamese withdrew in 1989 In 1993 Cambodia adopted a democratic constitution and held a free election Pol Pot was captured in 1997 for the human right violations he committed
