21-06-0480-00-0000 1.An MIH enabled multi-modal MS is currently connected to Network 1 (Wi-Fi) and getting services, including MIIS from a serving MIH (not shown), from Network 1 (Wi-Fi). 2.Through the MIIS (or its own monitoring of radio beacons), the MS realizes that it is under simultaneous coverage from a neighboring WiMAX and UMTS networks (Networks 2 and 3). 3.Also through the MIIS, the MS acquires the IP address information of the DHCP and AAA in Networks 2 and 3, respectively, using the new IEs proposed in this contribution. 4.Using the existing L3 connectivity through Network 1, the MS contacts the DHCP/AAA servers in Networks 2 and 3 to acquire IP layer connectivity information (e.g., CoA address, DNS address, default gateway) and performs necessary upper layer negotiations (e.g., AAA negotiation, PPP connection set up). This is done without setting up a PHY/link layer connectivity to Network 2 or Network 3. 5.The MS stores the acquired/negotiated IP configuration and AAA parameters in its MM function. 6.When a handover to one of the neighboring networks becomes necessary, the MM function in the MS can set up the lower layer connectivity to the target network and “bind” this lower layer connectivity to the corresponding upper layer IP/AAA connectivity/configuration that has already been established in steps 4-5.
