QoS Model for Networks Using 3GPP QoS Classes (draft-jeong-nsis-3gpp-qosm-02) Seong-Ho Jeong, Sung-Hyuck Lee, Georgios Karagiannis, Gert-Jan van Lieshout The 64th IETF meeting in Vancouver, Canada

Outline  Changes since -01  Additional optional QSPEC parameters  UE-/GGSN-initiated NSIS signaling  NSIS Signaling within the IP-based Transport Part of UMTS/GPRS  Next Steps

Changes since -01  Updated goals in Abstract and Introduction  Updated additional optional QSPEC parameters  Created a new section entitled "NSIS Signaling within the IP-based Transport Part of UMTS/GPRS"  Updated the interoperation between UMTS and external IP-based Networks

Goals  Define additional optional parameters for QSPEC which carries 3GPP QOSM specific information  Describe how the QSPEC information should be processed in QNEs  Describe how other NSIS QoS models, e.g., RMD- QOSM and Y.1541-QOSM, can be applied and interoperate with the 3GPP PDP context signaling  Make UMTS interoperate with other NSIS QOSMs  Make NSIS protocols applicable to UMTS and other wireless networks  Identify common QoS parameters for wireless networks such that scarce wireless resources can be used efficiently

Additional Optional QSPEC Parameters  The following parameters have been identified as additional optional QSPEC parameters, and formats of most of the parameters have been defined –3GPP QoS Classes: similar to Y.1541 classes –Delivery of Erroneous SDU (DES): 2 bits –Source Statistics Descriptor (SSD): 2 bits –Signaling Indication (SI): 2bits –SDU Format Information (SFI): 32 bits –Transfer Delay (TD): 32 bits –Packet Loss Ratio (PLR): 32 bits –Traffic Handling Priority (THP): 2 bits  More optional QSPEC parameters may be defined

UE-initiated NSIS Signaling  QoS-NSLP at the UE (QNI) sends a QoS-NSLP RESERVE message (in case of sender-initiated approach) –The RESERVE message contains the Initiator QSPEC to the next hop in the external IP network through the GGSN. –The Initiator QSPEC specifies optional parameters specific to 3GPP QOSM as well as generic QSPEC parameters for the application flow

UE-initiated NSIS Signaling (cont’d) UE1(QNI)GGSN1 GGSN2 UE2(QNR) IP-based Network (RMD-QOSM/ Y.1541-QOSM) PDP Context Signaling (Primary) NSIS Signaling QoS Mapping PDP Context Signaling (Secondary)

GGSN-initiated NSIS Signaling  The GGSN populates the initiator QSPEC based on the PDP context to create an NSIS session  The QoS-NSLP at the GGSN (QNI) sends a QoS- NSLP RESERVE message (in case of sender- initiated approach) which contains the Initiator QSPEC to the next hop in the external IP network  QoS translation between 3GPP and other QoS Classes (e.g., DiffServ or Y.1541) should be performed at the GGSN

GGSN-initiated NSIS Signaling (cont’d) UE1GGSN1(QNI) GGSN2(QNR) UE2 IP-based Network (RMD-QOSM/ Y.1541-QOSM) PDP Context Signaling (Primary) PDP Context Signaling (Secondary) NSIS Signaling PDP Context Signaling (Secondary) QoS Translation

NSIS Signaling within the IP-based Transport Part of UMTS/GPRS UE(MS)Node B(BS)RNC(BSC) NSIS Signaling Activate PDP Context Request SGSNGGSN Radio Access Bearer Setup Activate PDP Context Accept Create PDP Context Response NSIS Signaling Update PDP Context Procedure 3GPP- QOSM Create PDP Context Request

Next Steps  Refine the format of the optional QSPEC parameters for 3GPP-QOSM  Describe further NSIS Signaling within the IP-based Transport Part of UMTS/GPRS  Refine the interoperation between 3GPP and non- 3GPP networks  Refine QSPEC parameters as common parameters to be used for other wireless networks  Should this be a WG item?
