Hearing Screening: CHILD (vision and) HEARING TEST ACT Title 77, Chapter I, Subchapter J, Part 675: Hearing Screening WHO? WHEN? All children K, 1, 2, 3 All children in special education Any child referred by teacher All transfer students Annually EXCLUSIONS? Ear examination by physician AND audiologic evaluation within last 12 months Parent objection on religious grounds

What happens after this?

“A child is considered to have “failed” the threshold test and is referred for a medical evaluation and an educational screening evaluation if either or both of the following criteria are met…” (675.130) “ Medical examination must be immediately recommended…The names of these children shall be reported to the LEA, or its designee, for educational screening including audiological review (675.140)

“ Audiological review means a review of hearing screening results by an audiologist (675.20) “Educational screening means a review of the student’s current grade placement; classroom functioning level; achievement scores; teachers’ ratings of classroom performance regarding attention and concentration, reading, arithmetic, spelling, oral language and written language skills; and teacher’s descriptions of oral and written language performance, ability to hear in the classroom, and speech development ” (675.20)

HEARING SCREENING FOLLOW-UP PROCEDURES THRESHOLD AUDIOGRAM REFERRAL CRITERIA MET REFERRAL PROCESS INITIATED SIFTER to teacher to complete green audiogram, blank Treating Physician’s report, cover letter to parent(s) WAIT NO LONGER THAN 6 WEEKS COLLECT SIFTER, Treating Physician’s report (or information regarding medical status from parent(s) SEND TO LICA : pink audiogram (initial test) and any additional hearing test results obtained since initial threshold test ( e.g. retest at school; report from private audiologist) completed SIFTER Treating Physician’s report (or any information provided by parent (e.g. no appt scheduled yet; referral made to ENT; under treatment) WITHIN ONE WEEK: Above information returned, along with cover memo with recommendations

For which children should Audiologic Review be conducted? Why should information be sent in for Audiologic Review if: the physician said everything is OK? a re-screehing at school showed normal hearing? a community-based audiologist said hearing was within normal limits? Do we need signed consent from the parents to send information to LICA for audiologic review? ????????????

LICA Referrals/Contact WHO? HOW? Cannot accurately screen hearing Recommended following Audiologic Review Hearing loss identified Hearing aids or assistive listening device recommended or being used Known hearing loss, but no current (within one year) audiologic report 504 plan/IEP exists that addresses issues related to hearing loss Concern about listening Complete LICA Referral Inform parent of referral, provide copy of rights Obtain LEA and NTDSE signatures Send to LICA WHAT? Parents contacted for appointment, observe evaluation Parents provided immediate feedback District contacted by phone as needed, with report to follow
