Why the Spanish Armada was caused In his youth, Philip II of Spain was married to his fellow Catholic, Mary Queen of England. He was not king and the only way the English Parliament would countenance the marriage was if Philip was permanently forbidden from ruling. So he decided later on to invade the English.
