2
A narrative device presenting a story or group of stories within the frame of a larger narrative
3
Frame 1: Janie/Nanny Frame 2: Janie/Logan Frame 3: Janie/Jody Starks Frame 4: Janie/Tea Cake
4
Each frame will be broken down into 4 components: House (& how it relates to her marriage/relationship) Definition of love Janie’s Clothing/Appearance Fertility Imagery (think nature)
5
Nanny’s house Surrounded by a fence which is symbolic of confinement Behind the master’s house which is small in the shadow of the white man Narrow hallway – Janie’s view of love and the world is narrow with just a few doors Janie and Logan are married in Nanny’s parlor – Nanny’s control Pear tree is outside of fence Janie kisses Johnny outside the fence Janie will only feel love outside the fence
6
Nanny’s definition of love Love is the person that gives protection and security Anything that is better than what she had “Pick from a higher bush and a sweeter berry.” “Ah been waiting a long time, Janie, but nothing Ah been through ain’t too much if you just take a stand on high ground lak Ah dreamed.” “You know, honey, us colored folks is branches without roots, and that makes things come around in queer ways.” “So de white man throw down de load and tell de nigger man tuh pick it up. He pick it up because he have to, but he don’t tote it. He hand it to his womenfolks. De nigger woman is de mule uh de world so fur as Ah can see. Ah been praying’ fuh it thu be different wid you.”
7
Janie’s Clothing As a child wore the white children’s hand- me-downs (meaning better than the black children’s and not as good as the whites) White with bows equals purity and innocence
8
Fertility Imagery Pure / innocent /simple like a pear tree Janie must rely upon nature to explain love since Nanny really does not know what love is “You know, honey, us colored folks is branches without roots and that makes things come round in queer ways.” “Janie saw her life like a great tree in leaf with the things suffered, things enjoyed, things done and undone.” “ It was a spring afternoon...So this was marriage!” (10). “The vision of Logan Killicks was desecrating the pear tree...” “She was back and forth to the pear tree continuously wondering and thinking.”
9
Your group is responsible for the last three frames: Frame 2: Janie/Logan Frame 3: Janie/Jody Frame 4: Janie/Tea Cake
10
1. Find 3 quotes that illustrate the following categories. 2. Commentary where you discuss the significance of the (3) quotes in each category. House (& how it relates to her marriage/relationship) Definition of love Janie’s Clothing/Appearance Fertility Imagery (think nature)
11
Final result would be to determine how you view Janie at the end of each frame. Use the categories to help you determine your opinion. This should be written in your own words. (300 words)
12
Turn in : Due Written work for the three frames. Present: Visual depiction of Janie’s self- identity at the end of the novel and what you think contributed the most to this outcome.
13
How will you allocate the work? Responsibilities? Illustration? Quotes?
