“Grudge Ball” Factoring Review January 5, 2015

Warm-Up (Monday) What is a trinomial? What does a trinomial look like in factored form?

Essential Question How well do I remember the steps involved in factoring trinomials?

Remember Factoring??? Always look for a GCF first! 1.Identify the product and sum. 2.Find a factor pair that multiplies to the product and adds to the sum. 3.Build 2 fractions. 4.Simplify the fractions. 5.Fix your binomials with simplified f’s and a’s. (ax + f 1 )(ax + f 2 )

Activity – “Grudge Ball” Teams of 4 – Every member needs a board. Number each player 1 – 4. Come up with a team name and write it on the board with 10 x’s underneath.

Rules Erase 2 x’s from anywhere on the board with each correct answer. Erase more by making a basket from the 2 or 3 point lines. If you run out of x’s you can gain them back with a correct answer rather than taking from other teams. The winner is the team with the last x (or the most if we run out of time).

Let’s Play!

Factor: x 2 – 15x + 36 (x – 12)(x – 3)

Factor: x 2 – x – 2 (x + 1)(x – 2)

Factor: x 2 – 121 (x + 11)(x – 11)

Factor: x 2 – 12x + 11 (x – 1)(x – 11)

Factor: x 2 + 2x – 99 (x – 9)(x + 11)

Factor: x 2 – 5x x(x – 5)

Factor: x 2 – 7x – 18 (x + 2)(x – 9)

Factor: x 2 – 11x + 18 (x – 2)(x – 9)

Factor: x 2 – 36 (x – 6)(x + 6)

Factor: x 2 – 15x + 44 (x – 11)(x – 4)

Factor: x 2 – 10x + 16 (x – 2)(x – 8)

Factor: x 2 + 11x – 12 (x + 12)(x – 1)

Factor: x 2 – 15x + 54 (x – 9)(x – 6)

Factor: x 2 – x x(x – 1)

Factor: x 2 + 8x x(x + 8)

Factor: x 2 – 8x + 15 (x – 5)(x – 3)

Factor: x 2 + 5x – 14 (x + 7)(x – 2)

Factor: x 2 – 9x + 20 (x – 4)(x – 5)

Factor: x 2 + 13x + 40 (x + 5)(x + 8)

Factor: x 2 + x – 30 (x + 6)(x – 5)

Factor: 3x 2 + 18x – 21 3(x – 1)(x + 7)

Factor: 12x 2 – 18x + 6 6(x – 1)(2x – 1)

Factor: 7x 2 + 23x + 6 (7x + 2)(x + 3)

Factor: 16x 2 + 44x + 10 2(2x + 5)(4x + 1)

Factor: 14x 2 + 16x + 2 2(7x + 1)(x + 1)

Do we need more questions?

Reflection Do I feel like I am ready to continue with factoring tomorrow?
