1
Metallic Bonding This is the type of bonding found in metals
2
Some properties of metals you need to learn!
3
Important point- Movement of electrons is needed for electricity to flow. What gives metals these properties? Its their sturcture!
4
Why are metals Malleable? The layers of positive ions in a metal can slide over each other, if a large force is applied to a piece of metal. The ions are held together by the sea of electrons, so the metal spreads out instead of breaking. It is malleable.
5
Metallic bonding Metal atoms form a giant lattice similar to ionic compounds. The outermost electrons on each metal are free to move throughout the structure and form a “sea of electrons”. Having released electrons into this “sea” the metal atoms are left with a + charge. The moving electrons allow for good heat and electrical conductivity Metallic bonding is the attraction of + metal ions for the “sea of delocalised electrons.”
