1 Experiment 7 Chemicals in Everyday Life
Demonstrations and Lab Bench Work CHE116

2 Purpose of This Experiment
Make accurate observations for a chemical reaction Figure out what the products of the chemical reaction are Work in groups of 2 CHE116

3 Terminology for Observations
Gas Formation – bubbles are formed, solution fizzes Solid Formation, Precipitate Formation– solution becomes cloudy, solid material forms and may settle to the bottom of the test tube (color?) Color Change – solution may change from one color to another (indicate initial and final colors) Temperature Change – solution may become warmer or cooler, indicate direction of change CHE116

4 Determining Product Use observations and information in procedure pages for experiment 7 CHE116

5 Part A, Part C, and Part E PowerPoint demonstration (students do not do these reactions) Make your observations for your report sheet while the PowerPoint is shown CHE116

6 Parts B, Part D, and Part F Do the reactions at your lab bench
Do not stick anything into the reagent bottles at each bench. Pour reagents into SMALL beakers to use for reactions. (label the beakers) Do not return unused reagents to their original bottles. Pour unused reagents into the waste bottles in hoods. CHE116

7 Part A, Part C, and Part E The following photos are for the reactions that occur in parts A, C, and E of experiment 7. CHE116

8 Part A, observation #1 Ammonia and dry, red litmus paper
CHE116

9 Part A, observation #2 Ammonia and moist, red litmus paper
CHE116

10 Dry Red vs. Moist Red (from previous two slides)
CHE116

11 Part A, observation #3 Ammonium chloride and moist, red litmus paper
CHE116

12 Part A, observation #4 NH4Cl and NaOH and moist, red litmus paper
CHE116

13 Part A, observation #5 Fertilizer and NaOH and moist, red litmus paper
CHE116

14 Part A, observation #6 Ammonium carbonate and moist, red litmus paper
CHE116

15 Part C, observation #10 NaCl and H2SO4 and moist, blue litmus paper
A pungent gas forms, and the blue litmus paper changes color CHE116

16 Part C, observation #12 NaCl and AgNO3 solutions
CHE116

17 Part C, observation #14 chloride ions in tap water
CHE116

18 Part C, observation #15 Salt in flame
CHE116

19 Part E, observation #18 bleach NaI and bleach CHE116

20 Part E, observation #18 CHE116

21 Part E, observation #19 NaI and AgNO3 solutions
CHE116

22 Part E, observation #20 NaI and H2SO4
