1 Arpeggio Chords FUN FACT: This word comes from the Italian word "arpeggiare", which means "to play on a harp". The 12 Bar Blues are made up of a combination of 12 chords, those chords are C, F and G. The notes that make up the chords are C=Cega, F=Facd and G=Gbde. Arpeggio Chords are also known as broken chords and it is one of the first things we have learnt about the 12 Bar Blues. While studying the 12 Bar Blues I had learned how to find the middle ‘c’ on the keyboard. The easiest way to find any note ‘c’ on the keyboard is to find the two black notes, go to the left and the first white note next to them is the ‘c’. Sarah Hamilton 8H1

2 Melody Line The Melody Line introduces us to 2 new chords which are D and D#. The melody line is also played 3 times in the 12 Bar Blues. You can also play it with the Arpeggio chords. I have performed the 12 Bar Blues melody line and improvised using most or all the notes from the 12 Bar Blues Scale. I showed a good level of understanding off all 3 skills ( playing excellently, playing in time, great rhythms). G G G C3 D C3 D# D C3 Sarah Hamilton 8H1

3 12 Bar Blues-Scale C3 D E F G A B D# F# A# I had practised using notes from the 12 Bar Blues Scale on the keyboard and performed it quite well. I have learnt 2 chords from the 12 Bar Blues scale and that is F# and A#. I have also performed the 12 Bar Blues scale with the Melody Line and Arpeggio Chords excellently demonstrating 3 skills. 4 Slavery What was it? Thousands of Africans were forced to America because they were going to be sold into slavery. Being taken away from their family and friends and being treated cruelly is one of the things that made life horrible for the African slaves. Music had an important part in the slaves lives. It was a way of life for them and helped them express their unhappiness. The slaves were set free in 1865. Freedom was worse than slavery even after they were released there was still poverty and deprived of any kind of privilege. Sarah Hamilton 8H1

5 Blues Music The 12 Bar Blues is a form of blues that is the length of 12 bars, it also fits with the typical blues lyrics. In Blues music they had something called the call and response type singing, it came from the African slaves who brought it from their homeland. In Blues music there is also much bending and slurring of notes which produce a jarring sound. It consists of high pitched wailing charged with emotion. The main subjects covered by blues singers are love and characters in trouble. The difference between country and city blues is that the city blues were more sophisticated and backed up by a piano or complete band. Country blues was usually accompanied by acoustic instruments such as the guitar and harmonica. Country blues developed in the rural areas of Mississippi and Texas. Sarah Hamilton 8H1
