2 ABOUT SCHOOL LEADERS FOR AMERICA, INC. In 2003, four Colorado educators Dr. Cal Frazier, Dr. John Evans, Dr. Pat Grippe with guidance from DU Chancellor Dan Ritchie, Commissioner of Education Bill Maloney, and Denver Superintendent Jerry Wartgow established: –A new school principal alternative program to recruit and develop traditional and non- traditional leaders; and –Eight years later the program has 80 graduates.

3 A new mission and our military veterans To provide an efficient, quality alternative avenue to a career as a school principal; To operate a two year program to fulfill the requirements mandated by the state for principal licensure for military veterans; and To provide on the job training for future school leaders.

4 Requirements Candidates must be able to hold a license as a teacher and have three years of full-time, successful teaching experience; Or if they do not have a teaching license but have three years of other documented teaching or special service experience.

5 Taking Troops to Teacher one step further Troops to teacher provides Counseling and Referral services to military personnel interested in beginning a second career in public education as a teacher.

6 The Need Schools require a new breed of principal. SB 191 “publicly measured and paid for performance..” State Commissioner Robert Hammond: “School districts are reporting a shortage of qualified candidates for principal vacancies.”

7 Recruitment and Development of School Leaders Serve as a partner with local school districts in the recruitment of qualified military candidates; Provide an alternative licensure program to develop and train qualified military candidates; and Provide coaching and mentoring of military candidates in school districts as part of their licensure program.

8 SB 191 Based Courses –SB 191 mandates new performance based standards for teachers and administrators; –Understand the data for school improvement, planning, and monitoring; and –Frequent, meaningful, and structured feedback on job performance.

9 Courses First Year Assessments, Goal Setting, Portfolio Evidence Foundations for Leadership Contextual Understanding Planning and Organization Management and Evaluation of Instruction Supervision of Student Conduct Second Year Content Knowledge Instruction Individualization of Instruction Supervision of Personnel Resources (School Finance) School Site Safety and Maintenance Parent and Community Involvement Portfolio Evidence
