Definition: Medical condition in which bones become brittle and weak.

Signs and Symptoms: ●Pain the back ●Loss of height ●Stooped posture ●Bone fractures

Causes: Imbalance between new bone formation and old bone resorption.

Types: ● Primary osteoporosis ● Secondary osteoporosis ● Osteogenesis imperfecta ● Idiopathic osteoporosis

Primary osteoporosis A disease caused by low bone mass leading to bone fragility and fracture risk.

Secondary osteoporosis Caused by certain medical conditions or treatments that interfere with the attainment of peak bone mass and cause bone loss

Osteogenesis imperfecta It is an inherited disorder which causes bones to be extremely fragile.

Idiopathic juvenile osteoporosis Skeletal disorder that causes thinning of the bones usually beginning at childhood

Risk factors: ●Factors you can’t change: gender, age, ethnicity, family history, and history of previous fracture ●Factors you can change: poor diet, physical inactivity, smoking, mediation, and low body weight

Screening and Diagnosis: DXA (dual energy x-ray absorptiometry)

Complications ●Fracture of bones ●A loss of physical activity

Treatment: Using medications such as calcitonin can help bone maintenance.

Prevention: Ways to prevent it are: ● Exercising ● Having lots of Calcium in your diet. ● Having lots of Vitamin D in your diet.

Fun facts: ●The celebrity Joan Rivers has osteoporosis ●The word “osteoporosis” comes from the Greek word “osteon” meaning bone and “poros” meaning pore or passage ● The rate of hip fractures is two to three times higher in women than men
