3 Developmental School Counseling Lesson Plan For Juniors and Seniors in High School

4 Developmental School Counseling Lesson Plan ASCA: The Transformed School Counselor is expected to take the counseling curriculum to the students. Therefore all students will be provided with information and resources equally. Education Trust: Mirrors the theme of ASCA by stating that TSC are trained to assist ALL students reach academic success.

5 Competencies Students will acquire the appropriate knowledge needed to make informed decisions about choosing a college/university that best fits them.

6 Learning Objectives Students will be examine their academic strengths, goals, and future plans. Students will know appropriate questions to ask of college recruiters. Students will acquire knowledge, resources, and tools needed for researching colleges. Students will put together a College/Career Profile that will change as their interests and goals change.

8 Day One/Activity One Activities Day One/Activity One Introduction: In a semi-circle seating format, students will introduce themselves and state one academic activity and one leisure activity they enjoy most. All students will join in a discussion on how these activities make them feel when they have the opportunity to do them.

9 Day One/Activity One Activities Day One/Activity One Students will be given handout #1 to be completed in 10 minutes. Students will have a chance to discuss their results.

10 Activities Day One/Activity Two Students will be given handout # 2 to be completed in 10 minutes. Students will discuss their findings. Discussion will ensue on any discrepancies between interest and ability and what this means in terms of choosing a career.

11 Activities Day One Homework: -Each student will go home and based on their outcomes on handout #1 and #2 will list 5 careers that best fits. -For each career, each student will write down everything they know of that profession.

12 Day Two Computer Lab Go over homework Students will have an opportunity to present one career that they find most interesting.

13 Day Two College Board Brief history of who/what/why the College Board exists. Students will be introduced to the College Board website, including how to navigate the site to find information they seek. Source: www.collegeboard.comwww.collegeboard.com

14 Day Two Activity Students will be asked to go to “Major and Career Profiles” and search for majors and careers that interests them. Students will then go to “Find a College” to search for colleges that offers their area of interest. All materials gathered will be put into “College Profile” that students will keep and continue to revise throughout the school year.

15 Assessment/Follow-Up Experiential Student’s College/Career Profile will be collected and evaluated by counselor. Students will continually change and update their “College/Career Profile” as their interests change and share these changes with their counselor.

16 Assessment/Follow-Up Data Counselor will gather data on which student went to which college and if they went to the college/s that they featured in their “College/Career Profile”.
