Preliminaries “The land in Africa now called Liberia was originally named the Grain Coast by 15th- century Portuguese explorers who were impressed by its abundance of grain. In 1820, freed slaves from the United States founded Liberia, a name that means ‘Land of the Free.’” In your notebooks, why do you think the founders of Liberia felt it was necessary to change their country’s name from the Grain Coast to Liberia?

Objectives: The students will be able to use an informational text to write a literary analysis of the character Moses.

Focus Lesson: What’s in… Touch up and finish political posters from last class. Class Activity: reading quotation from “Literary Interpretation of Animal Farm” aloud. Small Groups: As a group, choose one quotation. List at least 3 ways how the quotation symbolically represents the character Moses.
