2. Preliminaries  “The land in Africa now called Liberia was originally named the Grain Coast by 15th- century Portuguese explorers who were impressed by its abundance of grain. In 1820, freed slaves from the United States founded Liberia, a name that means ‘Land of the Free.’”  In your notebooks, why do you think the founders of Liberia felt it was necessary to change their country’s name from the Grain Coast to Liberia?
