Objectives Develop a working definition of “new media.” Understand the characteristics and habits of a good new media designer. Understand the issues in creating, delivering, and displaying new media projects.

What Is New Media? Interactivity: ability for the communication to change based on user input (e.g., video game). Content evolution from user input: users can create or change content (e.g., online bulletin board).

Asynchronous communication: sender and receiver do not have to be communicating at the same time (e.g., e-mail). Global accessibility (e.g., Internet). Mixing the media (e.g., online game with sight, sound, and text messages).

What Is a New Media Designer? Creativity and imagination are key. An artist creates works to be presented, while a designer creates works to be used. The job of the new media designer is to communicate.

Tips for New Media Designers Work on your skills. Feed your head. Recharge your batteries. Keep your eye on the target. Develop good work habits.

Digital Graphics Creation: how the image is made in or converted to digital format (software). Delivery: how the user receives the files (e.g., CD-ROM or Internet). Display: the method for making the image visible (monitor, projector). All must work together effectively.

Raster vs. Vector Images Raster programs create images using pixels. –Pixel: single dot that can be any color but cannot be divided. –Pixelation: increasing the size of a raster image creates distortion Vector programs create images using math. –Vector images are scalable.

Summary New media are distinct from old media in interactivity, accessibility, and the ability to mix media. New media designers need good work habits and the ability to use their imagination even when they feel “dry.” Display, delivery, and creation all affect the choices of new media designers.
