Chapter 5

Shape tool  Vector images  Can be resized without loss of quality  Must rasterize to work with in some cases

Shape tool  What happens when you rasterize a vector image in terms of the quality of that image?

Shape tool  Default icon is the rectangular shape Sub tools: ○ Ellipse ○ Rounded Rectangle ○ Polygon ○ Line ○ Custom Shape

Options for the Shape tool  Slight differences for each shapes’ options bar Found on all shapes options: ○ First three buttons that represent three different ways that shapes can be created ○ Also affects some of the options on the bar

Shape layer options  Shape layers button: Click and drag to create a shape Filled with foreground color on tools panel Outline of the shape “path” created Layer thumbnail created on layers panel with the foreground color

Shape layer options  Layers thumbnails: Double clicking color thumbnail will open the color picker ○ This allows you to select a new fill color

Shape layer options  Layers thumbnail: Also has a thumbnail of the shape to the right of the color “Vector mask thumbnail” ○ This hides all of the areas outside of the mask

Take a look!  Why do you think a vector mask is created on the shape layer in the layers panel? Tell a peer!

Go try it out!  Create a new 10inx10in document in PS  Draw three different shapes  Take note of the layers that are created as you draw the shapes

Your favorite!  Turn to page 187 in the book  Label the figure in your notes using figure 5-16 at the bottom of the page Make sure to write ALL of the labels from the book

Shape layers options  5 buttons appear to control aspects of the options bar Create new, add to, subtract from, intersect are all familiar Exclude overlapping is new, but similar to intersect

Shape layer options  Create new shape layer: Each new shape created on a new layer After one shape has been drawn with this option, all other options (+/-) appear

Shape layer options  Styles option: Applies special effects to shapes or text Click on style box or “click to open style picker” button

Shape layer options  Far right of the bar is color box Opens color picker Pick a new color for shape layer New color will be applied to ALL SHAPES ON THAT LAYER

The Paths button  Creates only an outline of the shape this is called the path, which is adjustable When this option is used, it is created on the current layer NOT a new layer If the shapes layer option is used again, the outline can only be seen on the “paths” panel

The fill pixels button  Fill pixels button Painting tool Shape is filled with the foreground color Adjustable path does NOT appear around edge of shape New layer is NOT created ○ Must create the layer for yourself

Shape options  “Fill pixels” option has new options Mode drop-down list Opacity slider Anti-alias check box

Take a look!  What did you notice missing from the options bar when the path option of fill pixels option was chosen?

Go try it out!  In your 10inx10in document Create a shape using the paths button Create a shape using the fill pixels button Create a shape using the shape layers button After creating your shapes answer the summary question at the bottom of your notes.
