3
There are many professions that use polynomials. Such as…. Computer Programming… Engineering… …and Physical Therapist. And so much more!!! (Nuns are not involved in Polynomials)
4
There are two ways to add and subtract polynomials. You can do it horizontally or vertically. Simplify (2z + 5y) + (3z – 2y) (2z + 5y) + (3z – 2y) = 2z + 5y + 3z – 2y = 2z + 3z + 5y – 2y = 5z + 3y Horizontal example:
5
The second way is vertical or up and down almost like basic adding or subtracting. 2z + 5y 3z – 2y 5z + 3y Vertical example: Sometimes when using the vertical method it can be transformed into the horizontal method (as shown on the previous page) if found easier. But it’s all about personal preferences.

Life like Example… Example : Anne and Joe both make square tablecloths. Anne charges $1.00 for every square foot of area plus $2.00 for every foot of perimeter. Joe charges $1.50 for every square foot of area. How much would it cost to buy identical tablecloths, with sides of length x, from both Anne and Joe? Solution: The answer will be given in terms of x, since we do not know the side length. The area of Anne’s tablecloth is the square of the length of a side, or x2. The perimeter is 4 times the length of one side, since the square has four identical sides. So, the perimeter is 4x. Since Anne charges $1.00 for every square foot of area and $2.00 for every foot of perimeter, we can write an expression to represent the cost. Cost of Anne’s tablecloth = $1.00 area + $2.00 perimeter = $1.00 x2 $2.00 4x = x2 + 8x dollars

Why are polynomials important in Algebra? Polynomials are the foundation of all Algebraic equations!!! They are the base of adding and subtracting coefficients and variables... A Polynomial is a monomial or a sum of monomials...
