Letter in Biblical Historical Narrative Author: Jeremiah, one of the greatest Hebrew prophet… - son of Hilkiah, a priestly family of Anathoth, a Benjamite town 2 ½ miles NE of Jerusalem - known as the weeping prophet - poor, isolated and persecuted by his audience - called to prophecy in 626 BC during the 13th year of King Josiah of Judah (The New International Dictionary of the Bible) - contemporaries: Zephaniah, Habakkuk, Daniel

Target Audience: Exiled Israelites Theme: God Disciplines Those He Loves Context / Setting: Letter written from Jerusalem approx 598 B.C. during first few years of Israel’s exile into Babylon under King Nebuchadnezzar (Interpreter’s Bible Commentary)

4 PURPOSE to warn against false prophets
prophesying immediate return to Judah before 70 year prophesy end Jeremiah admonished Israel to live normal lives and pray for themselves and the Babylonians
