Justinian had enemies. Two groups of enemies joined together and tried to overthrow him in 532. (He wanted to leave).

A NEW SOCIETY In many ways Justinian was the last Roman emperor of the eastern empire. After he died, people began to speak Greek, rather than Latin. Scholars studied Greek, not Roman philosophy. Gradually, the empire lost its ties to the old Roman Empire and a new society developed.

THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE Developed in the eastern Roman Empire after the west fell. Named after the Greek town of Byzantium.

TRADE IN THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE Interaction with other groups. Merchants from Asia, Africa and Europe, came to Constantinople to trade. Byzantine society began to reflect these outside influences. It reflected Greek and Roman roots.

GOVERNMENT IN THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE Emperors led the church and. government. Believed the emperor was chosen by God to lead both. In the Western Empire, Pope led the church/ emperors led government. In time, people in the east and west practiced Christianity differently. The east broke away from the rest of the church and formed the Orthodox Church.
